UX and UI Design A Beginner First Month At Work
welcome
to your first day of work you've accepted a job offer at Hogwarts i mean your
new company and you're wondering how do you prepare yourself for your new job
now sit back and watch this five-minute survival guide that magically
turns you from newbie to crow within your
first month at work no seriously rule number one be proactive if your next
company has already prepared an on-boarding plan for you that's great although
it doesn't harm to be proactive
and get yourself up to speed as soon as
possible you know how talking to your colleagues for the first time can be a
little awkward well now this could be an ice breaker the sooner you do this the
sooner you could create impact before
you join prepare a list of questions on
questions for hr you could ask questions related to your employment information
or your employee benefits ask for questions related to your company ask
questions like what are your company
culture and values what are the company
policies and processes that you should know about how is the organizational
structure like and for team related questions ask how is the team culture like
find out if there are any team rituals what tool
does
the team use to communicate especially if you are a remote team how often are
meetings held are a sync communications preferred what tools does your team use
how is the typical workflow like and if you're going as a product designer
how
is the workflow in terms of design is there a dedicated user research team is
there a dedicated ux writer ask questions related to the product that you will
be working on for example what products would i be involved
in are all the information’s related to the
product documented somewhere how do i access it who are our users what is the
percentage of users on mobile versus desktop are there any product features
that are currently being worked on by other teams and was there any prior
research done for this product if yes is it documented
somewhere where can you access it how does
this product contribute to the overall business impact as you go along and
craft out your own set of questions you will likely have more questions to add
onto this list and that's a good thing rule number two do your research observe
real user feedback if your company has a public
forum or discord server join in read what
users are saying about their product if the product is a live app read about
their reviews check out on your company's social media to see what other people
are saying about your company
you will need to know where a company stands
in a crowded space and what are people talking about product what do users say
about your product are they enjoying your product at all look out for areas of
improvement that people talk about your product and who knows you might
identify some opportunities that you could immediately
propose to your manager or your team once you
start work now another way of doing your research is to stay updated with
company news the last thing you want is to be clueless at your first week maybe
a new company secured another round of funding or maybe they launched a new
feature or had any major changes
to the company check your company's blog LinkedIn
updates or any other social media platforms to be in a note now let's get to
work once you start meet with the manager first introduce yourself to a manager
ask the questions
that you have prepared find out if there will
be any mentor or work buddies that will be assigned to you until you get on
track find out what is your priority for the next three months find out what
are your goals for our next three months which is also known as okr or kpi
depending on which one your company practices you need
to set clear realistic goals in order to track
the performance over the next few months before you leave the conversation
schedule a regular check-in with your manager a very important thing to do when
you join a new company
is also to schedule one-on-ones with your
teammates just to break the ice and introduce yourself to the team find out
what their personal interests are outside of work find out what are they
working on on a high level you don't need to snoop around their entire job
scope get to know their personalities and working style
and if there are any awkward silences this is
the best time to ask all the questions that you've prepared most importantly
find out what is his or her preferred mode of communication because some people
prefers one-on-one meetings some people prefer the text be sure to time check
and make sure to end the meeting
on time if not earlier you want to respect your
teammates time if there is a need for a regular one-on-one check-in every
single month schedule a recurring invite in advance you have met your manager
you have met your teammate
you will also need to set up yourself to be
ready for work if there is an employee handbook read it set up your tag new
company equipment email design tools software the fastest way to get yourself
up to speed is also
to get access to files and documentations that
are relevant to your role so that you could read them on your own time without
annoying every single teammate you'll also need to understand the product
roadmap familiarize yourself with the tools that your team uses familiarize
yourself with how files are organized how design
components are named the next step is to share
your plan with the manager what your plan consists of is actually all your
priorities your goals your progress all the next steps all in a document update
your progress as you work through them so that you both are on the same page
and your manager is aware of your progress if he sees that you need any help he
could provide guidance
